Vaginal Infections

No one likes infections especially ones that happen down there. They can be uncomfortable, smelly, and downright irritating. The sad news is that every woman will experience a vaginal infection at least once in their lives and it can be recurring. These infections occur when the pH balance of your vagina goes out of whack and bacteria begins to thrive.

There are 2 types of common vaginal infections, namely a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. Both are caused by pH imbalances and have very similar symptoms. Knowing which one you have can help you treat it effectively.

Symptoms of a yeast infection include:

  • Itchiness
  • Redness around the vagina opening
  • Swelling
  • Vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese (thick and clumpy)

Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include:

  • A thin, watery discharge
  • Strong fishy odour (which worsens after sex)
  • Sometimes itchiness

If you are experiencing these symptoms for the first time, it’s important to visit a gynaecologist to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. If your infection is recurring (and you’ve been diagnosed by your gynae previously), you can use over-the-counter medications and creams to help clear up the problem, however bacterial vaginosis is generally treated with antibiotics so you may need to visit your doctor.

To try and avoid vaginal infections, make sure you:

  • Wash your vagina every day with clean water only (no douching or using scented soaps or creams which can cause a pH imbalance).
  • Avoid using skintight pants such as jeans which doesn’t allow air circulation to keep your vagina cool (bacteria thrive in warm conditions).
  • Keep your vagina as dry as possible since bacteria thrive in moist conditions. To do this, you can use Comfitex Feminine Wipes to keep wiping off any discharge and sweat throughout the day.
